Motivational Antidepressant Therapy for Hispanics

Purpose
This is a randomized study that compares two ways of conducting antidepressant therapy with Hispanics suffering from major depressive disorder: the standard approach vs. an approach that integrates techniques from motivational interviewing. Participants will receive 9 months of treatment, including medication, at no cost to them. They will also receive $25 for each completed independent evaluation. Visits occur weekly for three consecutive weeks, then biweekly until the end of the second month, then monthly.

Criteria
Inclusion Criteria:
* Hispanic patients only
* Diagnosis of DSM-IV MDD
* Hamilton Depression Scale (17-item) score > 15 at baseline
* Willing to consider medication as part of treatment
* Allows concurrent psychotherapy elsewhere
