Purpose

This study will develop strategies for early detection and primary prevention of mood disorders and associated impairment in adolescent children of parents with Bipolar Disorder.

Eligibility

Ages Eligible for Study: 12 Years - 17 Years
Genders Eligible for Study: Both
This study is not recruiting Healthy Volunteers.

Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:
For Parents:
1. Diagnosis of BD I or BD II
2. Currently in partial or full remission from a depressive or manic episode.
3. Speaks English or Spanish
4. Under active clinical care

For Adolescents:
1. Speaks English or Spanish
2. Presence of at least one current DSM-IV criterion A mood symptom plus at least one criterion B depression or mania symptom
3. Depression, irritability, anhedonia, or elated mood scores on KSADS-PL
4. Mania symptom scored at level 2 or 3 on the KSADS-PL
5. Score of less than 40 on CDRS-R scale
6. Score of less than 15 on the YMRS scale
7. Mild to moderate functional impairment, defined as a score of more than 61 but less than 75 on the CGAS
