Bipolar MRI Study
Please refer to this study by identifier 4890

Principal Investigator(s)
Bradley Peterson

Purpose

This 5-year longitudinal study will use functional MRI to better understand brain structure and function in persons who have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BD), particularly during changes in mood states (i.e., switching from normal mood to manic). Participation will include multiple MRI scans, neuropsychological testing, and diagnostic interviews. All participants will come in for a baseline study visit (MRI, neuropsych, interviews) and a visit at the end of the study period (MRI, interviews). We will also make monthly follow up calls during which we will administer three short measures of affective state. If during these calls we determine a participant has undergone a state-switch, we will invite him/her to come in for another MRI and set of interviews. Participants may be asked to come in for as many as 4-5 scans over the course of the study.
