Goals & Learning Objectives

The ACGME requires training programs to develop curriculum that contain “overall educational goals for the program, which the program must distribute to residents and faculty annually,” as well as “competency based goals and objectives for each assignment at each educational level.” Click for ACGME Curriculum Components

Goals
Goals are defined as “broad overarching statements” that help guide a program or individual toward a particular end (Joyce, ACGME). Goals may not be easily measurable "because they are general and aspirational in nature, goals may not be easily measurable" (Robertson, ACGME)

Learning Objectives
Learning objectives are concrete and measurable in nature and should relate to a goal. If enough objectives are met, then the related goal should be achieved. Learning objectives should be organized by program year and should reflect what a learner has accomplished by the end of that year. Resources to help you to address goals and objectives in your program are below.
