Goals & Learning Objectives

The ACGME requires training programs to develop curriculum that contain “overall educational goals for the program, which the program must distribute to residents and faculty annually,” as well as “competency based goals and objectives for each assignment at each educational level.” Click for ACGME Curriculum Components

Goals
Goals are defined as “broad overarching statements” that help guide a program or individual toward a particular end (Joyce, ACGME). Goals may not be easily measurable "because they are general and aspirational in nature, goals may not be easily measurable" (Robertson, ACGME)

Learning Objectives
Learning objectives are concrete and measurable in nature and should relate to a goal. If enough objectives are met, then the related goal should be achieved. Learning objectives should be organized by program year and should reflect what a learner has accomplished by the end of that year. Resources to help you to address goals and objectives in your program are below.

Resident/Fellow Education & Training

Each residency program is responsible for developing its own curriculum and training approaches for its residents. These should be organized around the six competency domains articulated by the ACGME. NYP’s GME Core Education Committee has developed several modules to address the competency.

Resident Assessment and Program Evaluation

The ACGME requires all programs to assess residents’ attainment of competency based objectives. The ACGME also requires programs to conduct an annual program evaluation to review program goals, objectives, and effectiveness with which these goals and objectives were achieved. Resource materials for planning and implementing both resident assessments and program evaluation can be found below.

Faculty Development

Our efforts to date have focused on faculty development for program directors. Activities include workshops, day-long retreats, and 15-minute mini-sessions at GME Committee meetings. We have also located and disseminated GME-related online resources.
